Bitcoin community starts campaign to find Bitcoin creator; $45,000 raised in 3 days

Much like that in an action-packed Tom Cruise starrer, the real-life hunt of a hero has begun; except that this time, the hero is the creator of Bitcoin, about whom we don’t really know much. Yes, Satoshi Nakamoto is the protagonist we are talking about here, and more than $45,000 have been raised for the sole purpose of discovering his identity.

The Campaign

An international community of Bitcoin enthusiasts called #Findsatoshi has launched a campaign on European crowdfunding platform ‘Boomstarter’ with an aim to hire the best private detectives around the world to find the man behind the name/alias ‘Satoshi Nakamoto’. The response of the campaign has so far been overwhelming as more than $45,000 has been raised in three days, while the total collection is expected to cross $230,000 USD.

The community post renders the details of how the search will be conducted, including release of search progress reports by investigation agencies on every third day, and official updates on the group’s news section and social networks regarding how the investigation is shaping up in different parts of the world.

Here is why it’s a Big Deal

Quick flashback; one of the most mysterious persons of modern age, whose name was etched in the Bitcoin white paper published in October 2008, Satoshi Nakamoto is considered the person who invented Bitcoin, and subsequently, gave rise to the ocean of cryptocurrencies we have today. According to blockchain and mining experts, the mystery man holds more than 980,000 Bitcoin, the present day value of which is 4,13,47,76,15,271 INR.

One of the primary concerns of the members who support #Findsatoshi is that, other than Satoshi himself, nobody knows the scope of Bitcoin in future. Also, people believe Satoshi holds the power to shutdown Bitcoin any day, wiping out billions of dollars in a snap, in which case it becomes vital to know his identity, as Bitcoin is no more a one man’s commodity.

Interestingly, there have been numerous speculations about the real identity of Satoshi Nakamoto in the past few years. While some of the ‘prime suspects’ have been Nick Szabo (a veteran cryptocurrency philosopher), Dorian Nakamoto (full name: Dorian Prentice Satoshi Nakamoto), and even Elon Musk (founder of SpaceX, Tesla and more), Craig Steven Wright (an American computer scientist and businessman) publicly identified himself as Satoshi Nakamoto. However, Wright’s claim was discarded right away as he could not produce the proof pertaining to the identity of Satoshi Nakamoto.
